Description
Odin represents the higher presence of Spirit embodied. Though his physical sight is limited due to his sacrificed eye, his real sight is turned inward, able to see his inner world clearly. It is said that Odin never ate food, only drinking the spirit of wine, and feeding any food around him to his dogs.
Geri and Freki are illustrated opposing eachother, yet always at the command of their master, Odin. Because both their names translate as “greedy”, we may explore the different parts of ourselves that will turn on eachother in order to theoretically satiate their hunger and dominate. It is the game of black and white, where one part of the Self is deemed as “bad”, and the other is deemed as “good”, but ultimately they want the same thing, to conquer the other, creating a war within the Self…
His spear, Gungnir, both separates Geri and Freki from overpowering one another, and pierces through the circle of spirit, while directing that spirit from the seat of his will, where his right (masculine principle) hand holds the spear at his Solar Plexus chakra, where his Will Power dwells. The vulva shaped blade of the spear pointing up and to the left (feminine side) suggests that Odin’s inner sight is what imbues his spear with magickal precision.
The runes were historically reddened with blood to activate them with life force magick. Blood was a necessary ingredient to activate the divinatory power of runes, who only revealed their wisdom after they had been fed the spirit that resides in the blood. Another indication of the self sacrifice that is required to attain wisdom.
The celestial body behind Odin, giving light to the runes, is known as Antares. Antares is linked to blood, and is known by the ancient Greeks as the rival of Ares, the Greek god of war and the planet Mars. This is another layer of duality that Odin notoriously sits between as the god of both War and Peace. This seat of duality is where his access to wisdom is achieved often through exercising an unyielding Will.
