I was walking through the woods earlier today and I was thinking about how reclaiming the goddess in our spirituality as a species could feel to some as if we are moving backwards, which doesn’t feel realistically helpful considering the new challenges that humanity faces.
What came through as my eyes took in the majesty of the forest, the body of the goddess herself, was that returning to what once was, no matter what it is, is quite impossible. However, what is timeless is always relevant. We cannot possibly move backwards as a species by embracing the goddess once again, but we can move forwards with the timeless nature of her wisdom and influence…
We are, after all, in a new Age, the Age of Aquarius. Aquarius is known for it’s disruptive, rebellious and chaotic nature (hello to the dark feminine), and is also associated with the stars themselves— the timeless cosmos. Most importantly it is associated with journeying through the wilderness, another timeless image…
The mythic image of Aquarius is one who runs away from society into the wilderness and has a meeting with the divine; a meeting which forever changes them. Whatever wisdom they receive from that encounter they then bring back and share for the benefit of humanity. This mythic image doesn’t depict someone kneeling in submission in a temple and invoking some external god for help. That archetypal image is entirely different.
Instead, Aquarius depicts an individual self-exiling—leaving the confines of society and the noise of the world to be embraced by the all accepting arms of the wild unknown in order to commune with the Divine within themselves and within nature. Is there a better image of the goddess than the wild unknown that contains the safety, wisdom, and divine spark of the earth herself?
To me, the rise of the goddess and the Age of Aquarius go hand in hand. Like Aquarius, the goddess is supposed to be disruptive. She is the alchemical force of transformation after all, and nothing evolves when it is perfectly comfortable in it’s mediocrity, in it’s excellence, or anywhere in between.
Recognizing that one’s physical and spiritual experience is one and the same is precisely what alchemy teaches us. It’s easy to live this truth when you are an ancient agricultural people simply because everything you put your attention to is alive, and what you cannot see in the soils beneath your feet is the knowing that— like the womb— every potential exists there. Co-creating with that potential by saving seeds, sewing seeds, building topsoil and even intentionally adding to the earth’s fertility is one of the greatest honors a human being could have, in my opinion.
Furthermore, when we live with the seasons rather than try to fight against our seasonal nature (as modern humans generally do), we can participate in our own alchemical process so much more viscerally, and with that conscious awareness of our own alchemical journey comes great rewards. When we can embody this process we can truly integrate our physical and spiritual transformation, just as the earth does through her physical seasons.
Earth based spirituality, once again, connoted that the Divine lived within the body of the earth, and therefore in the bodies of man, for we are of the earth. In a way, divinity in the age of the Goddess was localized, where as now, divinity is centralized to a “higher”, unknown place out of our human conception let alone our human grasp. This distinction naturally has the effect of dissuading people from consulting with their own intuition, both in the day to day decisions we make, but particularly on matters of importance.
Who benefits from people not trusting their own inner guidance? Those that desire to direct your experience and actions; those that desire to control you. And where does this inner guidance come from? It comes from your gut, your heart, your womb, and your dreams— all places that are most readily affected by our disembodied human experience, of course!
It makes all of the sense in the world that the Goddess is returning to the culture when we are simultaneously the furthest away from our embodied selves and sensibilities that I imagine we have ever been. Again, this dance of separating and recombining is the dance of the Goddess. The more familiar you are with it, the more attuned to the world that is rising into being you will be.
With that, to my paid members, I am so deeply thankful to be on this trip with you all, and truly joyous to share the creative alchemy that has been pouring through me and that has felt so intimately fulfilling along the way.
