The element of Air represents the sweeping away of all that is clouding our vision, and cluttering our minds. It is the element most closely associated with letting go, which is evident through it’s correlation to the Lungs, the breath. The Air is the most expansive of the elements. It inspires us to spread our wings and fly to higher ground where we may gain a more holistic perspective. Through this perspective, a healthy balance between the logical mind and the feeling body form.
Finding clarity is key to good communication, and self expression. One must be clear about how they feel, what they believe, and why, in order to fully translate this to others and be received by them. Communication also involves being a skilled listener and being on the receptive end of information in order to gain wisdom, knowledge, and understanding about one’s Self, the other, and the world at large.
Just as the Air is all around us all the time, the mind is an aspect of being human that we can never turn off. The mind is the great separator, without it, we would all be one single consciousness, living in a harmonious, but rather dull reality. There would be no language, no study, no stories; all things that represent the element of Air. This is why meditation is such profound medicine. It allows us to escape the duality of the mind that we’ve grown accustomed to, where the ego rules. Through meditation, we are able to return to a state of being that is at one with the primal universe, if just for a moment.
Corresponding to the symbol of the sword, Air is able to both cut through the illusion of separation, and create separation by splitting the whole into parts. In this way, the mind is both the problem and the solution. It is a magic trick.
This element is very much representative of monetary currency, where the mind is made to believe that something has value when it physically does not. At this time in history, even physical money is phasing out, making the concept more and more abstract, and yet culturally valuable. There is that trickster energy again! Where the element of Earth is akin to physical, tangible, material wealth, the element of air is more akin to monetary currency as we know it, and continues to be so with digital money and crypto on the rise. If we buy into this reality that numbers on a screen represent the amount of security we have, we can see how the imagination is a key component to this element, and how this element is a key component to practicing successful magick.
