The element of Earth represents the mundane aspects of life, those which can make our experience in this realm both meaningful and challenging. The Earth is the embodiment of fertility, receptivity. It represents the Mother archetype much like Water, but in a different, more physical way. It receives seeds and makes flowers. It receives dead materials and turns them into new life. It receives all of the other elements and carves out a place for them to thrive, to work their Will, to speak to us in their unique languages…
This is the element of the sacred center. Where all of the other elements have a motion to them, the Earth is solid, stable, and unmoving. It is deeply reliable in this way. It’s not going anywhere, it’s here to stay. This is partly why the Earth element represents security, because it is so incredibly consistent. This is also why when we simply walk outside barefoot and commune with the natural world, there is a dramatic reset of energy that occurs. While we are in that state, we are being received, and we are able to tap into a place of noticing, of stillness, and of deep soulful presence. Our physical bodies come into a greater union with all of the other elements when we are in a state of true presence, for it is here that we are able to truly witness, listen and receive them.
Earth is the element of longevity and sustainability… It represents strategy, structure, boundaries, and mastery. Any system that is not cyclical is not made to last. The Earth element by it’s very nature is here to teach us the power of the sacred circle, an everlasting loop that has no end, and no beginning. This is representative of the suit of coins, disks, and pentacles, all circular in form, and representing the level of material mastery that is represented by this element. Earth holds the wisdom that for any system to truly come into mastery, it must be meaningfully rewarded over time through determination, endurance, and commitment. “Slow and steady wins the race” is the ultimate theme here. The earth knows how to regulate itself with the wisdom that too much of any one energy will throw the whole system out of balance.
